Abu Dawud (4096) and Bayhaqi in Shuab (5739) both narrated it from the hadith of Yahya (that is, Qattan), from Muhammad bin Abu Yahya, who said, Ikrima narrated to me, and he mentioned it. Its chain is sahih. Muhammad bin Abu Yahya is Aslami, who was graded trustworthy by Ibn Main, Abu Dawud, Ibn Saad, and others.Of similar meaning is what was narrated from Ashath bin Salim, from his paternal aunt, from her paternal uncle, who said, "I was at the market of Dhul-Majaz, wearing a striped cloak of mine, dragging it." He said, "A man poked me with a stick and said, 'Raise your lower garment, for it is more lasting and more pure.' I looked, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I looked, and his lower garment was up to the middle of his shins."Ahmad (23086) narrated it from Waki, from Sufyan, from Ashath bin Salim, and he mentioned it. He also narrated it through another route (23087) from Husayn bin Muhammad, who said, Sulayman bin Qarm narrated to us, from Ashath, from his paternal aunt Ruhm, from her paternal uncle Ubayda bin Khalaf, who said, "I came to Madinah as a young man, wearing a striped cloak of mine as a lower garment, dragging it, when a man caught up with me and nudged me with a stick he had, then said, 'If you were to raise your garment, it would be more lasting and more pure.' I turned, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is only a striped cloak.' He said, 'Even if it is a striped cloak, do you not have an example in me?' I looked at his lower garment, and it was above the ankles and below the calf muscle."Baghawi also narrated it in Sharh al-Sunnah (11/12), and Bayhaqi in Shuab (5737, 5738), both from the hadith of Ashath, similarly. In all of their chains is Ashath's paternal aunt, Ruhm bint Aswad, who is unknown.His saying "striped" refers to a cloak with white and black stripes, and his saying "with a stick" means with a staff.Of similar meaning is also what was narrated from Uthman bin Affan, that he used to wear his lower garment up to the middle of his shins, and said, "This is how my companion wore his lower garment," meaning the Prophet ﷺ. Tirmidhi narrated it in Shamail (121), Ibn Abu Shayba (24843), and Bazzar in his Musnad (353), all from the hadith of Musa bin Ubayda Rabadhi, from Iyas bin Salama bin Akwa, from his father, from Uthman bin Affan, and he mentioned it.Bazzar said, "We do not know of anyone who narrated this hadith with a higher chain than from Uthman regarding the description of the Messenger of Allah's lower garment ﷺ, although it has been narrated through various routes from the Prophet ﷺ, and it has been narrated from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ, without a connected chain."Musa bin Ubayda Rabadhi Madani is daif according to the majority of scholars. Ahmad said, "Strike out his hadith." Haythami criticized it on this basis in Majma (5/122), after attributing it to Bazzar.
