While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Amr bin Zurara al-Ansari caught up with us wearing a fine garment, an izar and a cloak, which he had let hang down too low. The Prophet ﷺ began to take hold of the edge of his own garment, humbling himself before Allah, saying, "O Allah, Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your maidservant," until Amr bin Zurara heard him.Amr turned to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, my shins are thin and unsightly."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Amr bin Zurara, Allah has perfected all that He created. Amr bin Zurara, Allah does not love those who let their garments trail."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his palm just below his own knee and said, "Amr bin Zurara, this is the place of the izar." Then he raised his hand and placed it lower than that and said, "Amr bin Zurara, this is the place of the izar." Then he raised it again and placed it lower still and said, "Amr bin Zurara, this is the place of the izar."

Tabarani related it in Al-Kabir (8/277) through multiple routes from Walid bin Muslim, from Walid bin Abu Saaib, from Qasim, from Abu Umama who said, then he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Qasim, who is Ibn Abdul-Rahman Dimashqi, for he is hasan al-hadith. However, the chain contains Walid bin Muslim, who practices tadlis al-taswiya, except that he explicitly stated hearing it directly in what Ahmad related (17782) from him, saying, Walid bin Sulayman (meaning Ibn Abu Saaib) told us that Qasim bin Abdul-Rahman related to them, from Amr bin Fulan Ansari, who said, while he was walking with his garment trailing on the ground, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with him, then he mentioned the story similarly.Qasim bin Abdul-Rahman did not hear this from Amr bin Fulan, who is Ibn Zurara, as appears in Tabarani's chain. So his saying "from Amr bin Fulan" is a narration by way of reporting the story, not direct transmission, because the incident happened to him, and the intermediary, who is Abu Umama, was omitted, since Qasim bin Abdul-Rahman is known as the companion of Abu Umama. Hafiz Ibn Hajar also graded Ahmad's chain hasan in Al-Isaba (6035), without indicating that Qasim did not hear it directly from Amr bin Fulan. On this subject there is also what was related from Mughira bin Shuba, who said, I saw the Prophet ﷺ take hold of the waist-wrap of Sufyan bin Sahl while saying, "O Sufyan bin Abu Sahl, do not let your garment trail on the ground, for Allah does not love those who let their garments trail." Ibn Majah related it (3574), and Ahmad (18151), and Ibn Hibban (5442), all of them through the route of Sharik, from Abdullah bin Umayr, from Husayn bin Qabisa, from Mughira bin Shuba, who mentioned it.Sharik is Ibn Abdullah Nakhai, who has poor memory, and the hadith has other routes that all revolve around him. He was the sole transmitter of this story, and he is among those whose sole transmission is not accepted. As for what was related from Abu Hurairah, who said, while a man was praying with his garment trailing on the ground, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Go and perform wudu." So he went and performed wudu, then he came back, and he said again, "Go and perform wudu." A man said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, why did you order him to perform wudu and then fall silent about him?" He said, "He was praying while his garment trailed on the ground, and Allah does not accept the prayer of a man whose garment trails on the ground."Abu Dawud related it (638, 4086), and Bayhaqi (2412), both of them from the hadith of Musa bin Ismail, who said, Abu Aban bin Yazid Attar told us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Abu Jafar, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it. Ahmad related it (23217) through another route from Aban and Hisham Dastawai, both of them from Yahya with his chain, except that he left the companion unnamed. Its chain of transmission is daif because of Abu Jafar. Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman Darimi said, "This Abu Jafar is a man from the Ansar." Ibn Qattan affirmed this and said that he is unknown, and Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar likewise judged him unknown. Tirmidhi said, "His name is not known." Hafiz Ibn Hajar said, "Whoever claims that he is Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn has erred."
