Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Clothing (5787), from Adam, from Shubah, "Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi narrated to us, from Abu Hurairah," and he related it. The apparent meaning of this hadith is that the part of the waist-wrap that hangs below the ankles will be in the Fire. Some scholars have interpreted it to mean that this practice is the practice of the people of the Fire, namely the disbelievers, because it was their custom to trail their garments out of arrogance. Other scholars have said that it should be understood as conditioned upon vanity, because the threat mentioned in it is agreed upon, as is the case in the chapter that follows it.Ibn Abdul-Barr said, "Its implication is that trailing the garment for a reason other than vanity does not carry this threat, though trailing a shirt or any other garment is disliked in every case."Nawawi said, "As for the unqualified hadiths stating that whatever is below the ankles will be in the Fire, what is meant by them is what is done out of vanity, because they are unqualified, so they must be understood in light of the qualified version" (Sharh Muslim).
