Suwayd bin Qays reported, "I sold the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a pair of trousers before the Hijrah. He weighed out the payment for me and gave me extra."
بعت من رسول الله ﷺ رجل سراويل قبل الهجرة، فوزن لي فأرجح لي.
Reported by Abu Dawud (3337), Ibn Majah (3579), Nasai (4593), and Hakim (2/30), all from the hadith of Shubah, from Simak bin Harb, from Malik bin Umayrah, as mentioned. Its chain is hasan because of Simak, for he is hasan al-hadith. Abu Dawud and others said, "The correct view is that of Sufyan, from Simak bin Harb, from Suwayd bin Qays." I say, if what they say is correct, then the error is from Simak bin Harb, otherwise it should be understood that he heard from both of them.As for his statement "sarawil," this is the plural of sirwal, and its root is "shalwar," a foreign word, being an item of Persian clothing. The Prophet ﷺ liked it because it covered the body and prevented exposure while sitting and sleeping. Did the Prophet ﷺ wear it? I have not come across any explicit text stating that he wore it, since he mostly wore the izar, unless one says that he simply never had the opportunity to wear it.As for what was narrated from Abu Hurairah, who said, "One day I entered the market with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he sat down near the cloth merchants and bought a pair of sarawil for four dirhams. There was a weigher in the market who would weigh goods, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Weigh, and give more than the due weight.' The weigher said, 'This is a saying I have never heard from anyone.' Abu Hurairah said, I said to him, 'It is enough to show your ignorance and harshness in your religion that you do not recognize your Prophet.' So he threw down the scale and jumped toward the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, wanting to kiss it, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pulled his hand away from him and said, 'What is this? This is what the non-Arabs do with their kings, but I am not a king, I am only a man from among you.' Then he weighed and gave more than the due weight, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the sarawil" - this is daif jiddan. It was reported by Abu Yaala (6162) from Abbad bin Musa, who said, Yusuf bin Ziyad narrated to us, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Ziyad narrated to us, from Aghar bin Muslim, known by the kunya Abu Muslim, from Abu Hurairah, as mentioned. Yusuf bin Ziyad is the Basri, and he is daif jiddan. Haythami faulted the narration on this basis in al-Majmu (5/121-122). His teacher is even weaker than him, namely Abdul-Rahman bin Ziyad Afriqi, who used to narrate fabricated reports attributing them to reliable narrators. Ibn Hajar also declared him daif in al-Fath (10/273).
