A number of robes fastened with golden buttons were presented as gifts to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he distributed them among his companions.Makhramah said, "Miswar, come with me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for I have been told that he has distributed some robes."So we set out, and he said to me, "Go in and call him for me."I went in and called him out to him. He came out wearing one of those robes and said, "I kept this one aside for you, Makhramah."He looked at it and said, "He is pleased."Then he gave it to him.
أهدي لرسول الله ﷺ أقبية مزررة بالذهب، فقسمها في أصحابه، فقال مخرمة: يا مسور اذهب بنا إلى رسول الله ﷺ فإنه قد ذكر لي أنه قسم أقبية، فانطلقنا، فقال: ادخل فادعه لي، قال: فدخلت، فدعوته إليه، فخرج إلي وعليه قباء منها. قال: خبأت لك هذا يا مخرمة. قال: فنظر إليه فقال: رضي، فأعطاه إياه.
Ahmad narrated it (18927) from Hashim (that is, Ibn Qasim Abu Nadr), who said, Layth narrated to us, Abdullah bin Ubaydullah bin Abu Mulayka narrated to me, from Miswar bin Makhrama, and he mentioned it.Its isnad is sahih, and Bukhari titled a chapter on it, saying, "Chapter on the garment buttoned with gold," and he mentioned it as a suspended report from Layth (5862) with a similar isnad. He also reported it as a connected report as mentioned before, and also (2599) from Qutayba bin Saeed, from Layth, with a similar isnad, except that the phrase "buttoned with gold" did not occur in it as connected.Ibn Hajar said, "This could have occurred before the prohibition, so once the prohibition of silk and gold for men took place, there remains no argument in this for anyone who permits any of that. It could also have occurred after the prohibition, in which case he gave it to him so he could benefit from it, such as by clothing women with it or selling it, as happened with someone else."I say, it is also possible that Bukhari held the view that the prohibition of gold for men applies to jewelry such as earrings, rings, chains, and the like, while buttons, teeth, and gold threads in a cloak and similar items involve no harm.
