She said, Abu Jahm bin Hudhayfah gave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a Syrian woolen cloak with patterned markings as a gift, and he wore it during the prayer. When he finished, he said, "Return this cloak to Abu Jahm, for I looked at its markings during the prayer and they nearly distracted me."
قالت: أهدى أبو جهم بن حذيفة لرسول الله ﷺ خميصة شامية، لها علم، فشهد فيها الصلاة، فلما انصرف قال: ردي هذه الخميصة إلى أبي جهم، فإني نظرت إلى علمها في الصلاة، فكاد يفتنني.
Malik narrated it in Muwatta (484) through the narration of Abu Musab Zuhri, from Alqama bin Abu Alqama, from his mother, that Ayesha said, and then he mentioned it.A note of caution, Yahya Laythi narrated it from Malik in the chapter on prayer (67), but dropped "from his mother" from its chain of transmission. Ibn Abdul-Barr said in al-Tamhid (20/108), "No one among the narrators followed him in that. All of them narrated it from Malik in Muwatta, from Alqama bin Abu Alqama, from his mother, from Ayesha. Yahya dropped 'from his mother,' and this is counted among his errors. The hadith is sahih and connected as narrated by Malik from Ayesha, and it was likewise narrated by a group of Malik's companions from him." End of quote.I say, as for what appears in the printed edition of Muwatta according to Laythi's narration with "from his mother" included, this is a mistake, and it should be counted among the editor's alterations.
