The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon to us when Hasan and Husayn came forward, wearing red shirts, stumbling and getting back up. He came down, picked them up, and carried them up to the pulpit. Then he said, "Allah has spoken the truth, 'Your wealth and your children are only a trial' [Taghabun 64:15]. I saw these two and could not bear it." Then he resumed the sermon.
خطبنا رسول الله ﷺ، فأقبل الحسن والحسين- وعليهما قميصان أحمران- يعثران ويقومان، فنزل فأخذهما فصعد بهما المنبر، ثم قال: صدق الله: {إنما أموالكم وأولدكم فتنة} [سورة التغابن: ١٥] رأيت هذين فلم أصبر ثم أخذ في الخطبة.
Reported by Abu Dawud (1109), Tirmidhi (3774), Ibn Majah (3600), and Nasai (3/108), and Ibn Khuzayma declared it sahih (1082), as did Ibn Hibban (6038) and Hakim (1/287), all of them through Husayn bin Waqid, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from his father, and he related it.Its chain is hasan because of Husayn bin Waqid, for his hadith is hasan.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith, we only know it through the hadith of Husayn bin Waqid."
