The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Beware of extremism in religion, for those who came before you were destroyed only because of extremism in religion."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: وإياكم والغلو في الدين، فإنما هلك من كان قبلكم بالغلو في الدين.
Ahmad (1851), Ibn Majah (3029), and Nasai (5/268) narrated it, and Ibn Khuzayma (2867), Ibn Hibban (3871), and Hakim (1/466) graded it sahih, all of them through the route of Awf bin Abu Jameela, from Ziyad bin Husayn, from Abu Aliyah, from Ibn Abbas, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me on the morning of Jam, "Come, pick up pebbles for me." So I picked up for him small stones of the kind used for throwing, and when I placed them in his hand, he said, "Yes, with pebbles like these. Beware of excess in religion..." and so on to the end of the hadith. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of the two Shaykhs." I say, Ziyad bin Husayn Hanzali, or Riyahi, is among the narrators found only in Muslim.
