The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not be harsh upon yourselves, for those before you were destroyed by their harshness upon themselves. You will find their remnants in monasteries and hermitages."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: لا تشددوا على أنفسكم، فإنما هلك من قبلكم بتشديدهم على أنفسهم، وستجدون بقاياهم في الصوامع والديارات.

Bukhari narrated it in Tarikh al-Kabir (4/97), Tabarani in Kabir (4/97) and Awsat (3078), and Bayhaqi in Shuab (3601), all of them through the route of Abdullah bin Salih Abu Salih, who said, Abu Shurayh told me, that he heard Sahl bin Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf, from his father, from his grandfather, and he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Abdullah bin Salih, who was the scribe of Layth. There is disagreement about him, but his hadith is hasan when it has a basis and there is no objectionable element in it. Abu Shurayh is Abdul-Rahman bin Shurayh bin Ubaydullah Al-Maafiri, a reliable narrator among the men of the Sahih.
