"Are you not enjoying as much food and drink as you wish? I saw your Prophet ﷺ unable to find even enough poor-quality dates to fill his stomach."Another narration adds, "Yet you are not satisfied with anything less than several varieties of dates and butter."
ألستم في طعام وشراب ما شئتم؟ لقد رأيت نبيكم ﷺ وما يجد من الدقل ما يملأ به بطنه. زاد في رواية: وما ترضون دون ألوان التمر والزبد.
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on asceticism and delicate matters of the heart (2977), through several routes from Abu Ahwas, from Simak, from Numan bin Bashir, and mentioned it. He also narrated it through the route of Zuhayr, from Simak, from him, in similar fashion, adding the addition mentioned. His saying, "daqal," means inferior dates.
