Ahmad (10560) narrated it, and this is his wording, from Yazid (that is, Ibn Harun) and Abu Abdul-Rahman Muqri. Tirmidhi (1633) and Nasai (3108) narrated it through Ibn Mubarak. Hakim (4/260) narrated it through Jafar bin Awn. All of them narrated from Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah Masudi, from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman, the freedman of the family of Talha, from Isa bin Talha, from Abu Hurairah, who then related it. Its isnad is sahih. Masudi became confused in his later years, but the hearing of Abu Abdul-Rahman, who is Abdullah bin Yazid Muqri, and of Jafar bin Awn, took place before that confusion set in. See al-Kawakib al-Nayyirat (293).Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." There are other hadiths on this subject mentioned in the book of jihad, in the chapter on the merit of guarding in the path of Allah.It is also related that Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the skin of a servant shivers from fear of Allah, his sins fall away from him just as the leaves fall away from a dry tree."Bazzar (1322) narrated it, as did Abu Naeem in Marifat al-Sahabah (8022), and Bayhaqi in al-Shuab (782), all of them through Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad Darawardi, from Yazid bin Abdullah bin Had, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim Taymi, from Umm Kulthum bint Abbas, from Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib, who related it. Umm Kulthum bint Abbas was not deemed reliable by anyone, yet despite this, Ibn Hajar graded it sahih in Mukhtasar Zawaid Bazzar (2229).
