I said to Ammar, "Tell me about what you have done in the matter of Ali. Was it an opinion you formed yourselves, or something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted to you?"He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not entrust to us anything that he did not entrust to all people. However, Hudhayfah informed me that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Among my companions are twelve hypocrites. Eight of them will not enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. As for those eight, the dubaylah will suffice to deal with them. As for the other four,'" Aswad bin Amir said, "I did not retain what Shuba said about them."In another narration from him, he said, We said to Ammar, "Tell us about your fighting. Was it an opinion you formed, since opinions can be right or wrong, or was it a charge entrusted to you by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not entrust to us anything that he did not entrust to all people."He said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "In my nation"—Shuba said, "I think he said, 'Hudhayfah narrated to me'"—and Ghundar said, "I think he said, 'In my nation are twelve hypocrites who will not enter Paradise nor find its fragrance until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. Eight of them, the dubaylah will suffice to deal with them, a lamp of fire that appears on their shoulders until it emerges from their chests.'"
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on the characteristics of the hypocrites (2779 (9)), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, "Aswad bin Amir told us, Shuba bin Hajjaj told us, from Qatada, from Abu Nadra, from Qays bin Abbad," and he related it with the first wording. He also narrated it (2779, 10) by way of Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, "Shuba told us," with the same chain, giving the second wording. The second group of eight is a substitute for the first group of eight, as the second narration in Muslim's version makes clear. As for his saying, "Among my companions there are twelve hypocrites," if these are indeed the ones meant, then their names, as Ibn Abu Hatim mentioned in his Tafsir (1880/6), are as follows.1. Wadia bin Thabit 2. Judham bin Khalid 3. Thalaba bin Hatib 4. Jariya bin Amir, along with his two sons, 5. Mujammi 6. and Zayd 7. Mutab bin Qushayr 8. Abbad bin Hunayf, brother of Sahl bin Hunayf 9. Abu Habiba bin Azar 10. Nabtal bin Harith 11. Bijad bin Uthman 12. a man called Bahzaj
