The Prophet ﷺ said, "There are three traits whoever possesses them is a hypocrite, and whoever possesses one of them possesses a trait of hypocrisy. When he speaks, he lies. When he is entrusted, he betrays. And when he promises, he breaks his promise."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: ثلاث من كن فيه فهو منافق وإن كان فيه خصلة ففيه خصلة من النفاق، إذا حدث كذب، وإذا أؤتمن خان، وإذا وعد أخلف.
Bazzar (1662) narrated it from Amr bin Ali, who said, Abu Dawud narrated to us, who said, Shubah narrated to us, from Mansur, from Abu Waail, from Abdullah, and he mentioned the hadith. Its chain is sahih. There has been disagreement over whether it should be considered a statement of the Prophet or a statement of a companion.Amr bin Ali Fallas said, "I do not know of anyone who agreed with Abu Dawud in making it a statement of the Prophet, and Abu Dawud is trustworthy."Ibn Adi said, "What Amr said, that he does not know of anyone who agreed with Abu Dawud in making it a statement of the Prophet, refers specifically to the hadith of Shubah, from Mansur, from Abu Waail. As for the version narrated from Amash, from Abu Waail, from Abdullah, more than one person made it a statement of the Prophet when narrating from Amash, among them Malik bin Saeed and Muhammad bin Ubayd and others. A group also narrated it from Amash as a statement of a companion." Al-Kamil (3/1129).However, Daraqutni, after mentioning the disagreement over whether it should be considered a statement of the Prophet or a statement of a companion, said, "The version making it a statement of a companion is more sahih." Al-Ilal (5/85–86).
