Someone came to Ibn Masud and said, "This is so-and-so, with wine dripping from his beard."Abdullah replied, "We have been forbidden from spying, but if something becomes apparent to us, we will act upon it."
أتي ابن مسعود فقيل هذا فلان تقطر لحيته خمرا، فقال عبد الله: إنا قد نهينا عن التجسس ولكن إن يظهر لنا شيء نأخذ به.
Narrated by Abu Dawud (4890) and Abdul-Razzaq in Musannaf (18945), and Hakim graded it sahih (4/377), all of them through routes from Amash, from Zayd bin Wahb, who said, and then he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.His words, "This is so-and-so," are given by name in the versions of Abdul-Razzaq and Hakim as "Walid bin Uqbah."
