He related that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever consumes a meal at the expense of a Muslim man's reputation, Allah will feed him its like from Hell. Whoever is clothed in a garment at the expense of a Muslim man's reputation, Allah will clothe him in its like from Hell. And whoever takes a stand against a man seeking fame and showing off, Allah will expose him in a position of fame and showing off on the Day of Resurrection."
أنه حدثه أن النبي ﷺ قال: من أكل برجل مسلم أكلة فإن الله يطعمه مثلها من جهنم، ومن كسي ثوبا برجل مسلم فإن الله يكسوه مثله من جهنم، ومن قام برجل مقام سمعة ورياء، فإن الله يقوم به مقام سمعة ورياء يوم القيامة.
Narrated by Abu Dawud (4881), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (240), Ahmad (18011), and Abu Yaala (6858), all of them through various routes from Waqqas bin Rabia, from Mustawrid, who related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan, on account of Waqqas bin Rabia Shami, from whom a number of people transmitted, and whom Ibn Hibban mentioned in Thiqat. It is further strengthened by what Ibn Mubarak narrated in Zuhd (707) from Jafar bin Hayan, from Hasan Basri, as a mursal report, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, and then he related the hadith similarly. Jafar bin Hayan is Abu Ashhab Attaridi Basri, a trustworthy narrator among the men accepted by all the compilers.His saying, "whoever eats through a Muslim man," means eating by way of speaking ill of him behind his back, slandering him, attacking his honor, or exposing him to harm before someone who is his enemy.
