My mother called me one day while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in our house. She said, "Come here, I'll give you something."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "What did you intend to give him?"She replied, "I was going to give him some dates."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "If you had not given him anything, a lie would have been recorded against you."
Abu Dawud (4991) and Ahmad (15702) both narrated it from the hadith of Layth bin Saad, from Ibn Ajlan, that a man from the freed slaves of Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabia Adawi told him, from Abdullah bin Amir, that he said, and he then recounted it.The freed slave of Abdullah bin Amir was named Ziyad, as stated in Jarh wa Tadeel (3/552), and Fasawi likewise named him in Marifa wa Tarikh (1/251), and from him Bayhaqi in Sunan al-Kubra (10, 198/199) through another route from Muhammad bin Ajlan. So this hadith is hasan because of what corroborates its meaning among other hadiths, among them the following. On this subject there is what was narrated from Abu Hurairah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said, "Whoever says to a child, 'Come here, take this,' and then does not give him anything, that is a lie."Ahmad (9836) narrated it from Hajjaj, who said, Layth narrated to us, who said, Aqeel narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Hurairah, and he then recounted it. But Ibn Shihab did not hear from Abu Hurairah.
