Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Medicine (5772), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Greetings (2225:16), both of them through the route of Ibn Wahb, from Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Salim bin Abdullah and Hamza informed me that Abdullah bin Umar said, and he then related it.This hadith affirms bad omen in three things, though most of the narrations from Ibn Umar have the wording, "If there were bad omen in anything." Scholars have taken two positions on this.The first is that the narrator conveyed it according to its general meaning and erred in doing so, because the prohibition against taking bad omens has come down in sahih and widely transmitted hadiths, and this is also contradicted by the hadith of Ayesha and Saad bin Abu Waqqas.The second, assuming this narration is sound, holds that if one of you has a house whose residence he dislikes, or a wife whose company he dislikes, or a horse whose keeping he dislikes, he should part with it, by moving from the house, divorcing the wife, or selling the horse, so that he does not fall into the forbidden misconception of bad omen. It has also been said that the bad omen of a house is its narrowness and the harm of its neighbor, the bad omen of a wife is that she does not bear children, and the bad omen of a horse is that it cannot be ridden into battle, and that it is best to part with it in such cases.
