The Prophet ﷺ passed by a man sleeping in the mosque, lying flat on his face. He nudged him with his foot and said, "Get up and sit. This is the manner of sleep of the people of Hell."
قال مر النبي ﷺ على رجل نائم في المسجد منبطح على وجهه فضربه برجله: وقال: قم واقعد، فإنها نومة جهنمية.
Ibn Majah (3725) and Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (1188) both narrated it through Walid bin Jameel Dimashqi, that he heard Qasim bin Abdul-Rahman narrating from Abu Umama, who said, and then he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan on account of Walid bin Jameel and Qasim bin Abdul-Rahman, for there is disagreement about both of them, though their hadith is graded hasan so long as no error is shown in it. As for Abu Hatim's statement, "A shaykh who narrated unrecognized hadiths from Qasim," this means he transmitted them alone, without anyone sharing them with him. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators. His statement, "a hellish sleep," refers to the traits of the people of Hell who are dragged into the fire on their faces, as in the words of the Almighty, "Those who will be gathered on their faces into Hell, they are in the worst position and further astray in the path" [Furqan 25:34]. The comparison holds only in some respects, not in every respect, for the people of Hell do not sleep and do not die, rather they wish they were dust.
