The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not let your livestock and children roam free when the sun has set, until the darkness of early evening passes, for the devils spread out when the sun sets, until the darkness of early evening passes."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: لا ترسلوا فواشيكم وصبيانكم، إذا غابت الشمس، حتى تذهب فحمة العشاء، فإن الشياطين تنبعث إذا غابت الشمس، حتى تذهب فحمة العشاء.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Drinks (2013:98) via Abu Khaythama Zuhayr, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, and he related it.His saying, "your fawashi," refers to anything that roams freely among one's livestock, such as camels, sheep, and other animals. It is the plural of fashiya, because they "fashu," meaning they spread out over the land.His saying, "the fahma of Isha," means its darkness and blackness. Some have explained it here as referring to its onset and the first part of its darkness. Ibn Athir mentions the same in al-Nihaya, saying, "The darkness between Maghrib and Isha prayers is called fahma, and the darkness between Isha and Fajr is called asasa." Nawawi notes this in Sharh Muslim.In another narration, as in the previous chapter, "When night falls" - or "when you reach evening" - "keep your children close, for the devil spreads out at that time. But when a portion of the night has passed, let them go."
