I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Cover the vessels and tie shut the waterskins, for there is one night in the year when a pestilence descends. It does not pass by an uncovered vessel or an untied waterskin without some of that pestilence falling into it."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: غطوا الإناء، وأوكوا السقاء، فإن في السنة ليلة ينزل فيها وباء، لا يمر بإناء ليس عليه غطاء، أو سقاء ليس عليه وكاء، إلا نزل فيه من ذلك الوباء.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Drinks (2014) from Amr Naqid, who said, Hashim bin Qasim told us, Layth bin Saad told us, Yazid bin Abdullah bin Usama bin Had Laythi told me, from Yahya bin Saeed, from Jafar bin Abdullah bin Hakam, from Qaqa bin Hakeem, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, then he mentioned it.Muslim also narrated it through the route of Ali Jahdami, from Layth bin Saad, who said, "Among us, non-Arabs guard against that in December."Similar in meaning is what was reported from Ibn Abbas, who said, a mouse came and began dragging a wick. It brought the wick and dropped it in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the mat he was sitting on, and it burned a spot the size of a dirham. He said, "When you go to sleep, put out your lamps, for Satan directs creatures like this one to do this and burn you."This was narrated by Abu Dawud (5247), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (1222), Ibn Hibban (5519), and Hakim (4/284–285), all of them through the route of Amr Hammad bin Talha, who said, Asbat (that is, Ibn Nasr Hamdani) told us, from Simak, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, then he mentioned it.Hakim said, "This is a hadith sahih in its isnad."I say, the narration of Simak from Ikrima contains some inconsistency, and Asbat bin Nasr has a slight weakness. Saji said, "He narrated hadiths from Simak bin Harb that are not corroborated."
