The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Close the door, tie the waterskin, turn the vessel upside down or cover it, and put out the lamp, for Satan does not open a closed door, nor untie a fastened waterskin, nor uncover a vessel. And the little mischief-maker may set a household ablaze upon its people."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: أغلقوا الباب، وأوكوا السقاء، وأكفئوا الإناء، أو خمروا الإناء، وأطفئوا المصباح، فإن الشيطان لا يفتح غلقا، ولا يحل وكاء، ولا يكشف إناء، وإن الفويسقة تضرم على الناس بيتهم.
Malik narrated it in the chapter on the description of the Prophet ﷺ (21), from Abu Zubayr Makki, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he mentioned it. Muslim narrated it in the chapter on beverages (2012:96) through the route of Malik, with the same chain. Humaydi narrated it in his Musnad (1273) from Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Abu Zubayr, with the same chain, and added in it, "Beware of staying up talking after the stillness of the man falls, for you do not know what Allah spreads abroad of His creation," and its chain of transmission is sahih.This is how it appears in the printed edition, "the stillness of the man," but perhaps the correct wording is "the stillness of the night," as Hakim narrated it (4/284) through another route from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Beware of staying up talking after the stillness of the night falls, for you do not know what Allah brings forth of His creation," and its chain of transmission is hasan.
