He came as part of a delegation to the Prophet ﷺ with his people, and the Prophet heard them calling a man Abd al-Hajar. He asked him, "What is your name?"The man replied, "Abd al-Hajar."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "You are only Abdullah."
وفد النبي ﷺ في قومه، فسمعهم يسمون رجلا عبد الحجر، فقال له: ما اسمك؟ قال: عبد الحجر، فقال له رسول الله ﷺ: إنما أنت عبد الله.
Ibn Abu Shayba (26421) narrated it, as did Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (811), both of them through Yazid bin Miqdam, from Miqdam bin Shurayh, from his father, from his grandfather Hani bin Shurayh, and he mentioned it. The wording given here is that of Ibn Abu Shayba, while Bukhari's version is longer, beginning with the story of Abu Hakam, which is mentioned in the chapter on taking a kunya from the eldest of one's children, except that Bukhari said "Hani bin Yazid" instead of "Hani bin Shurayh." Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Yazid bin Miqdam, for his hadith is hasan.
