I named my daughter Barrah. Zaynab bint Abu Salama said to me, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade this name. I myself was named Barrah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not declare yourselves pure. Allah knows best who among you are the truly righteous.'"They asked, "What should we name her then?"He said, "Name her Zaynab."
سميت ابنتي برة، فقالت لي زينب بنت أبي سلمة: إن رسول الله ﷺ نهى عن هذا الاسم، وسميت برة، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: لا تزكوا أنفسكم، الله أعلم بأهل البر منكم فقالوا: بم نسميها؟ قال: سموها زينب.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Manners (2142:19) from Amr Naqid, who said, Hashim bin Qasim narrated to us, Layth narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata, and he mentioned it.Ibn Ammar Shaheed noted in his Ilal (26) that the Egyptians narrated it from Layth with the addition of "Muhammad bin Ishaq" between Yazid and Muhammad bin Amr. Abu Dawud (4953) likewise narrated it from Isa bin Hammad, who said, Layth informed us, in the same manner. However, Hafiz Mizzi mentioned in one version of Tuhfat Ashraf (11/324) that Muslim recorded it with "Ibn Ishaq" mentioned in its chain.Rasheed Attar also saw it this way in some copies of the Kitab al-Atraf of Abu Masud Dimashqi, as he stated in his book Ghurar Fawaid (37). Rasheed Attar said, "Perhaps it is thus in a sound original, and the mention of Ibn Ishaq was dropped from some copies."
