Salim bin Abdullah asked me, "What is istabraq?"I replied, "It is the thick, coarse type of brocade."He said, I heard Abdullah say, Umar saw a man wearing a garment of istabraq, so he brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, buy this and wear it for the delegations of people when they come to you."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears silk."Some time passed, then the Prophet ﷺ sent Umar a garment of silk. Umar brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "You have sent me this, yet you said about its like what you said?"The Prophet ﷺ answered, "I only sent it to you so that you might gain some wealth from it."Because of this hadith, Ibn Umar disliked having silk markings on a garment.
قال لي سالم بن عبد الله: - ما الإستبرق؟ قلت: ما غلظ من الديباج، وخشن منه- قال: سمعت عبد الله، يقول: رأى عمر على رجل حلة من إستبرق، فأتى بها النبي ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله، اشتر هذه، فألبسها لوفد الناس إذا قدموا عليك. فقال: إنما يلبس الحرير من لا خلاق له فمضى من ذلك ما مضى، ثم إن النبي ﷺ بعث إليه بحلة، فأتى بها النبي ﷺ فقال: بعثت إلي بهذه، وقد قلت في مثلها ما قلت؟ قال: إنما بعثت إليك لتصيب بها مالا فكان ابن عمر، يكره العلم في الثوب لهذا الحديث.
Bukhari narrated it in Adab (6081), and Muslim in Libas wa Zeenah (2068:9), both through the route of Abdul-Samad, who said, my father narrated to me, he said, Yahya bin Abu Ishaq narrated to me, and he mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim did not mention his own wording except for what differs from the text before it.A note of benefit, Allah the Exalted said, "O children of Adam, We have sent down to you clothing to cover your private parts, and as adornment, but the clothing of righteousness, that is best. That is from the signs of Allah, so that they may remember" [Araf 7:26]Clothing is of two kinds. The first is that which covers the private parts, and Allah pointed to it with His saying, "clothing to cover your private parts". The second is that which is worn for adornment and beauty, and He pointed to it with His saying, "and as adornment". It is said "reesh" and "riyash", and "reesh" is what belongs to a bird, functioning as its covering. Allah has bestowed upon us a favor in that He sent down clothing that is necessary, just as He sent down clothing whose purpose is adornment and beauty, for as it is stated in the sahih, "Indeed Allah is beautiful and loves beauty." Muslim narrated it (147).
