Usayd bin Hudayr was a righteous man, cheerful and pleasant. While he was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, entertaining the people and making them laugh, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ poked him in the side.Usayd said, "You have hurt me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Take retaliation."Usayd said, "Messenger of Allah, you are wearing a shirt, but I was not wearing one."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lifted his shirt, and Usayd embraced him and began kissing his side, saying, "May my father and mother be ransom for you, Messenger of Allah, this is what I wanted."
كان أسيد بن حضير رجلا صالحا ضاحكا مليحا، فبينما هو عند رسول الله ﷺ يحدث القوم، ويضحكهم، فطعن رسول الله ﷺ في خاصرته، فقال: أوجعتني؟ قال: اقتص قال: يا رسول الله إن عليك قميصا، ولم يكن علي قميص، قال: فرفع رسول الله ﷺ قميصه، فاحتضنه، ثم جعل يقبل كشحه، فقال: بأبي أنت وأمي يا رسول الله أردت هذا.

Hakim narrated it (3/288) — and from him Bayhaqi (49/8) — from Abdullah bin Muhammad Saydalani, who said, our teacher Muhammad bin Ayub narrated to us, our teacher Yahya bin Mughira Saadi told us, our teacher Jareer (that is, Ibn Abdul-Hameed) narrated to us, from Husayn, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Layla, from his father, who said, and then he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Yahya bin Mughira Saadi, for he is truthful and has a biography in Al-Jarh wal-Tadil (9/191), and Muhammad bin Ayub is Ibn Yahya bin Durays, who is trustworthy and has a biography in the biographical works. Dhahabi said in Al-Muhaddhab (12446), "Its chain is strong."Abu Dawud narrated it (5224) through the route of Khalid (that is, Tahhan), from Husayn, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Layla, from Usayd bin Hudayr, and mentioned it similarly. He dropped "from his father" from the chain, so it became disconnected, because Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Layla never met Usayd bin Hudayr.As for his saying, "he kisses his side," the side (kashh) is the area between the flank and the ribs.
