The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a group of people in a gathering who were unsheathing a sword and passing it among themselves while it was uncovered. He said, "Have I not forbidden you from doing this? When one of you draws a sword, let him sheathe it before handing it to his brother."
أن رسول الله ﷺ مر بقوم في مجلس يسلون سيفا يتعاطونه بينهم غير معمود، فقال: ألم أزجركم عن هذا؟ فإذاسل أحدكم السيف فليغمده، ثم ليعطه أخاه.
Imam Ahmad (14981), Bazzar in Kashf Astar (3335), and Ibn Hibban (5943) all narrated it through routes going back to Ibn Jurayj, who said, Abu Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir narrating it, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Abu Zubayr, for he is hasan al-hadith. Haythami said in Majma (2917), "Ahmad and Bazzar narrated it, and its narrators are trustworthy," and he said, "Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi narrated it in abbreviated form."I say, it is as he said, for Abu Dawud (2588) and Tirmidhi (2163) both narrated it through the route of Hammad bin Salama, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade passing a sword around while it is unsheathed.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama. Ibn Lahia narrated this hadith from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, from Banna Juhani, from the Prophet ﷺ, and the hadith of Hammad bin Salama is, in my view, more sahih."
