I heard the Prophet ﷺ mention a son-in-law of his from Banu Abd Shams, and he praised him highly for his conduct as a relative by marriage. He said, "He spoke to me and was truthful with me, and he made me a promise and fulfilled it."
سمعت النبي ﷺ وذكر صهرا له من بني عبد شمس، فأثنى عليه في مصاهرته إياه فأحسن قال: حدثني فصدقني، ووعدني فوفى لي.
Reported by Bukhari in the chapter on the virtues of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ (3729), and Muslim in the virtues of the Companions (2449:95), both from the hadith of Muhammad bin Amr bin Halhala Duali, that Ibn Shihab told him, from Ali bin Husayn, from Miswar bin Makhrama, who related it. The wording given here is Bukhari's.What is meant regarding the Banu Abd Shams is Abu As bin Rabi bin Abdul-Uzza bin Abd Shams, whom the Prophet ﷺ had married to Zaynab, his eldest daughter, before his prophetic mission. He fought at Badr alongside the polytheists and was taken captive. Zaynab then paid his ransom, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made it a condition for him that he send her to Madinah, which he did. The Prophet ﷺ praised him for fulfilling his pledge. Abu As later embraced Islam shortly before the Conquest and migrated to Madinah, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ restored his daughter to him.It is established in the Sahihayn that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray while carrying Umamah, the daughter of Zaynab from Abu As bin Rabi. Ali bin Abu Talib later married this same Umamah after the death of her maternal aunt, Fatimah. Abu As bin Rabi died during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, in Dhul-Hijjah of the year twelve after the Hijrah.
