Someone in the presence of Amr bin As said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The Hour will come when the Romans are the most numerous of people.'"Amr said to him, "Be careful what you say."He replied, "I am only saying what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Amr said, "If you say that, then indeed they possess four qualities. They are the most forbearing of people in times of trial, the quickest to recover after a calamity, the swiftest to return to battle after retreat, and the best toward the poor, the orphan, and the weak. And a fifth fine and beautiful quality, they are the most resistant to the oppression of kings."
Muslim narrated it in the book of Fitan (2898) from Abdul-Malik bin Shuayb bin Layth, who said, Abdullah bin Wahb narrated to me, who said, Layth bin Saad informed me, who said, Musa bin Ali narrated to me, from his father, who said, Mustawrid Qurashi said in the presence of Amr bin As, and he related it. In another version of his, "They are indeed the most forbearing of people at a time of turmoil, the most consoling of people at a time of calamity, and the best of people to their poor and weak."Muslim also narrated it from Harmala bin Yahya Tujibi, who said, Abdullah bin Wahb narrated to us, who said, Abu Shurayh narrated to me that Abdul-Kareem bin Harith told him that Mustawrid Qurashi said, and he related it.Daraqutni raised an objection to it, saying, "Abdul-Kareem never met Mustawrid, so the hadith is mursal."I say, this is just as he said, for the narration of Abdul-Kareem bin Harith bin Yazid Hadrami from Mustawrid is disconnected. However, Muslim placed first in the hadith the narration of Musa bin Ali (with the diminutive form) bin Rabah Lakhmi, from his father Ali bin Rabah bin Qusayr, which is connected, and then followed it with the mursal narration. What is tolerated in supporting narrations is not tolerated in primary narrations. As for his statement "ajbar an-nas" (the most consoling of people), with a jim, this is how it appears in most of the source manuscripts. In some narrations it is "wa asbar" (the most patient), with a sad, and in others "akhbar" (the most experienced), with a kha. The first is more correct, as Qadi Iyad said.
