The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Hang the whip where the household can see it, for it serves as discipline for them."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: علقوا السوط حيث يراه أهل البيت، فإنه لهم أدب.
Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (10/345), and in Al-Awsat (Majma Bahrayn, 3130), from the route of Abbas bin Walid Khallal Dimashqi, who said, Sallam bin Sulayman narrated to us, who said, Isa and Abdul-Samad, the two sons of Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas, narrated to us, from their father, from Ibn Abbas, who said such and such.Sallam bin Sulayman is Ibn Sawwar Thaqafi, who is disputed. His student Abbas bin Walid declared him trustworthy, while Aqeeli said, "His hadith is not corroborated," and Ibn Adi said, "In my view he is munkar al-hadith, and most of what he narrates is hasan, except that it is not corroborated."I say, this is one of the reports where he is corroborated, though only partially. Bazzar narrated it, Kashf Astar (2077), and Tabarani in Al-Kabir (10/345), both from the route of Mindal bin Ali, from Ibn Abu Layla, from Dawud bin Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas, from his father, with the same wording. In Bazzar's version it reads "the servant sees him" instead of "the household sees him."Mindal bin Ali is Ibn Ali Anazi, who is daif according to most scholars. However, Ibn Abu Hatim quoted in Jarh wal-Tadil (8/435) from Darimi, who said, "I asked Yahya bin Main about Mindal bin Ali," and he said, "There is no harm in him." Abdul-Rahman narrated to us, he said, I heard my father say, "I asked Yahya bin Main which of Mindal and Habban he preferred," and he said, "There is no harm in either of them." Abdul-Rahman narrated to us, he said, I heard my father say, "This is also what I say." Bukhari had included Mindal in his book Al-Duafa, so my father said, "He should be removed from there."Ibn Abu Layla has poor memory, and as for Dawud bin Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas, Ibn Adi said of him, "There is no harm in his narrations from his father, from his grandfather," and this is one of them.In sum, the two routes strengthen each other, and by this the hadith becomes hasan, since the hadith has a basis.Haythami said in Al-Majma (8/106), "Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir and Al-Awsat with similar wording, and Bazzar narrated it and said, 'where the servant sees him,' and the chain of Tabarani in both is hasan."
