I came to the mosque of the people of Damascus, and there I found a circle that included elders from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Among them was a young man with dark, kohl-like eyes and gleaming front teeth. Whenever they disagreed about something, they would refer the matter back to this young man.I said to the man sitting next to me, "Who is this?"He replied, "This is Muaz bin Jabal."I came back in the evening, but they did not show up. I came again the next morning, but they did not come, so I went back. Then I saw the young man praying by a pillar, so I prayed two units of prayer, then moved over to him. He gave the closing salutation of the prayer, and I drew near to him.I said, "I love you for the sake of Allah."He pulled me close to him and asked, "What did you say?"I said, "I love you for the sake of Allah."He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ relate from his Lord, saying, 'Those who love one another for the sake of Allah will be upon pulpits of light in the shade of the Throne on a Day when there is no shade except His shade.'"So I left and went on until I met Ubada bin Samit, and I mentioned to him the hadith of Muaz bin Jabal. He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ relate from his Lord , saying, 'My love is due to those who love one another for My sake, My love is due to those who give to one another for My sake, and My love is due to those who visit one another for My sake. Those who love one another for the sake of Allah will be upon pulpits of light in the shade of the Throne on a Day when there is no shade except His shade.'"
Ahmad narrated it (22064) — and this is his wording — as did Tirmidhi (2390), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (577), all of them through routes going back to Habib bin Abu Marzuq, from Ata bin Abu Rabah, from Abu Muslim Khawlani, who related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih, and Abu Muslim Khawlani's name is Abdullah bin Thawb."
