She said, "The verse 'He frowned and turned away' [Abasa 80:1] was revealed concerning Ibn Umm Maktum, the blind man. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and kept saying, 'Messenger of Allah, guide me.'At the time there was a man from among the polytheists sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept turning away from Ibn Umm Maktum and attending to the other man, saying to him, 'Do you see any harm in what I am saying?'The man would answer, 'No.'It was about this that the verse was revealed."
قالت: أنزل {عبس وتولى} في ابن أم مكتوم الأعمى، أتى رسول الله ﷺ فجعل يقول: يا رسول الله، أرشدني، وعند رسول الله ﷺ رجل من المشركين، فجعل رسول الله ﷺ يعرض عنه، ويقبل على الآخر، ويقول: أترى بما أقول بأسا؟ فيقول: لا. ففي هذا أنزل.
Tirmidhi (3331) narrated it, and this is his wording, as did Ibn Jareer in his Tafsir (24/102) and Hakim (2/514), all of them from the hadith of Saeed bin Yahya bin Saeed Umawi, from his father, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, and he related it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith. Some of them narrated this hadith from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, who said, "He frowned and turned away" [Abas 80:1] was revealed concerning Ibn Umm Maktum, without mentioning in it, from Ayesha." Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the criterion of the two Shaikhs, though they did not include it, for a group narrated it as a mursal report from Hisham bin Urwa." Dhahabi said, "This is how Yahya bin Saeed Umawi narrated it as a connected (marfu) report from Hisham, while a group narrated it as mursal, and that is the correct view." End of quote.I say, he was corroborated in narrating it as connected by Abdullah bin Umar Jufi, who said, Abdul-Rahim bin Sulayman narrated to us, from Hisham bin Urwa, with his chain of transmission. Ibn Hibban (535) narrated it from Hasan bin Sufyan, who said, Abdullah bin Umar Jufi narrated to us, with his chain of transmission. This is a sahih chain, and it strengthens the first chain.Likewise, Abu Muawiya Darir narrated it from Hisham, from his father, from Ayesha. Daraqutni narrated it in Al-Ilal (14/175), except that he judged the mursal version to be the stronger one.As for the mursal version, Malik narrated it in Muwatta, Book of the Quran (8), from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, who said, "He frowned and turned away" [Abas 80:1] was revealed concerning Abdullah bin Umm Maktum, and he related it. Waki likewise narrated it from Hisham, and Ibn Jareer narrated it through his route.This mursal version, though strong, does not undermine the connected one, for its narrators are also trustworthy. Perhaps Urwa himself would sometimes narrate it as mursal and at other times as connected. It has many corroborating reports in the books of Sunnah, and I have clarified this repeatedly in Jami Kamil.
