Khawla bint Thalaba reported,

She said, "Concerning me, by Allah, and concerning Aws bin Samit, Allah revealed عز وجل the opening of Surah Mujadilah."She continued, "I was married to him, and he was a very old man who had grown ill-tempered and irritable. One day he came in to me and I answered him back about something, and he became angry and said, 'You are to me as my mother's back.' Then he went out and sat for a while in the gathering place of his people, and afterward he came back in to me wanting me for himself."I said, 'Certainly not. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Khuwayla, you will not come near me after saying what you said, until Allah and His Messenger judge between us with their ruling.'"He lunged at me, but I refused him, and I overpowered him the way a woman overpowers a weak old man, and I threw him off me. Then I went out to one of my neighbors and borrowed her clothes, and I set off until I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I sat before him and told him what I had suffered from my husband, and I began to complain to him ﷺ about the bad temper I had to endure."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept saying, 'Khuwayla, your cousin is a very old man, so fear Allah concerning him.'"By Allah, I had not left before revelation came down in the Quran. The state that used to come over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ overcame him, and then it lifted from him and he said to me, 'Khuwayla, Allah has sent down revelation concerning you and your husband.' Then he recited to me, 'Allah has certainly heard the words of the woman who disputes with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah, and Allah hears your exchange. Indeed, Allah is Hearing, Seeing' [Mujadilah 58:1], up to His words, 'and for the disbelievers there is a painful punishment' [Mujadilah 58:4]."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Tell him to free a slave.'"I said, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he has nothing with which to free a slave.'"He said, 'Then let him fast two consecutive months.'"I said, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he is a very old man and has no capacity for fasting.'"He said, 'Then let him feed sixty poor people with a load of dates.'"I said, 'By Allah, Messenger of Allah, he does not have that either.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Then we will help him with a basket of dates.'"I said, 'And I, Messenger of Allah, will help him with another basket.'"He said, 'You have done right and done well. So go and give it in charity on his behalf, then take good care of your cousin.'"So I did."Abdullah said, "My father said, Saad said, 'The basket referred to is a woven date basket.'"
