Malik narrated it in the Book of Purification (13) from Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abu Talha, from Humayda bint Abu Ubayda, and he mentioned the hadith. From Malik it was also narrated by Abu Dawud (75), Tirmidhi (92), Nasai (68), and Ibn Majah (367). Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih." Humayda bint Abu Ubayda was mentioned by Ibn Hibban among the trustworthy narrators, and Tirmidhi's grading of the hadith as sahih is evidence of his declaring her trustworthy. Ibn Hajar, in Talkhis, also transmitted that Bukhari, Daraqutni, and Aqeeli graded it sahih.Bayhaqi (1/245) said, Abu Isa said, "I asked Muhammad, meaning Bukhari, about this hadith, and he said, Malik bin Anas refined this hadith well, and his narration is more sahih than the narration of others."Bayhaqi said, Husayn Muallim narrated it in a way close to Malik's narration. He then narrated it through his route and through the route of Hammam bin Yahya, both from Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abu Talha, from Umm Yahya, from her maternal aunt, the daughter of Kaab (who was married to Abdullah bin Abu Qatada), and he mentioned the hadith. He mentioned other routes for it, then said, "All of this corroborates the soundness of Malik's narration." End of quote.I say, it was also narrated by Ibn Khuzayma in his Sahih (104), Ibn Hibban (1299), and Hakim in Mustadrak (1/160), through the route of Malik. Hakim said, "Sahih, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not include it, given the principle they established regarding what they omitted. Nevertheless, they both testified that Malik bin Anas is the authority in the hadith of the people of Madinah, and this hadith is among those Malik graded sahih and cited as evidence in Muwatta." End of quote.The hadith has a corroborating narration from Ayesha, narrated by Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, Daraqutni, Bayhaqi, and others, though every route of it contains either a daif or an unknown narrator.The sahih and established narration regarding the purity of a cat's leftover water is the hadith of Abu Qatada, and this is the view held by most scholars among the Companions of the Prophet , the Followers, and those after them, including Shafii, Ahmad, Ishaq, and others.As for what was narrated from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet , "The vessel should be washed seven times if a dog laps from it, and if a cat laps from it, it should be washed once," this is daif, for the mention of a cat lapping is only a statement of Abu Hurairah himself and not attributed to the Prophet. Abu Dawud (72) narrated it from Musaddad, from Mughira bin Sulayman (another chain) and from Muhammad bin Ubayd, who said, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, both from Ayub, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Abu Hurairah, and they did not raise it to the Prophet, but added, "And if a cat laps, it should be washed once." This was after he had narrated it from Ahmad bin Yunus, who said, Zaida narrated to us, in the hadith of Hisham, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from him, raised to the Prophet, regarding a dog lapping into the vessel of one of you, as Muslim and others narrated it, which was already covered in the chapter before this one.Tirmidhi (91) narrated it from Sawwar bin Abdullah Anbari, who said, Mutamir bin Sulayman narrated it to us, raised to the Prophet, and he said, "This hadith has been narrated through more than one route from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet , similar to this, without mentioning, 'If a cat laps into it, it should be washed once.'"Bayhaqi said, in Marifat Sunan wal-Athar (1/311), after having reported the hadith through the route of Abu Dawud, from Musaddad, "As for the hadith of Muhammad bin Sirin, from Abu Hurairah, 'If a cat laps, it should be washed once,' some narrators inserted this into his hadith about the Prophet regarding a dog's lapping, and they erred in doing so. The sahih position is that the ruling about being raised to the Prophet applies to the dog's lapping, while the ruling regarding the cat is only a statement of Abu Hurairah himself."
