Ali said, "They once beat the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he lost consciousness. Abu Bakr stood up and began crying out, 'Woe to you! "Do you kill a man merely because he says, My Lord is Allah" [Ghafir 40:28]?'"They asked, "Who is this?"Others replied, "It is the madman, the son of Abu Quhafa."
لقد ضربوا رسول الله ﷺ مرة حتى غشي عليه، فقام أبو بكر، فجعل ينادي: ويلكم! {أتقتلون رجلا أن يقول ربى الله}، فقالوا: من هذا؟ قالوا: ابن أبي قحافة المجنون.
Bazzar (7506), Abu Yaala (3691), and Hakim (3/67) all narrated it through Muhammad bin Abu Ubayda, from his father, from Amash, from Abu Sufyan, from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim." Hafiz also graded it sahih in Fath al-Bari (7/169).I say, Abu Sufyan is Talha bin Nafi, and Amash's narration from him is sound, as Ibn Adi stated, otherwise his hadith would be hasan.A note of caution, the phrase "from Amash" has dropped out of the printed edition of Musnad Abu Yaala. The correct reading includes it, as Diya transmitted it from him in al-Mukhtarah (6/221), and Ibn Hajar in Matalib Aliyah (3879).
