Amr bin As reported,

"I never saw the Quraysh attempt to kill the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except on one day. I saw them sitting in the shade of the Kaabah, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying at the Maqam. Uqba bin Abu Muayt got up, walked over to him, placed his cloak around his neck, and pulled it so violently that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell to his knees. The people cried out, thinking he had been killed. Then Abu Bakr came rushing in and grabbed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by his shoulders from behind, saying, "Would you kill a man for saying, 'My Lord is Allah'?" [Ghafir 40:28]. They then turned away from the Prophet ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, and when he had finished his prayer, he passed by them as they sat in the shade of the Kaabah and said, "People of Quraysh, by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have been sent to you with slaughter," gesturing with his hand to his throat.Abu Jahl said to him, "Muhammad, you were never one given to foolish speech."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "You are one of them."

His saying, "And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, 'Do you kill a man because he says my Lord is Allah, and he has come to you with clear proofs from your Lord? If he is a liar, then upon him is his lie; but if he is truthful, some of what he promises you will strike you. Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.'"
