Urwa bin Zubayr reported,

I said to Abdullah bin Amr bin As, "Tell me about the worst thing the polytheists did to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He said, "While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying in the courtyard of the Kaabah, Uqba bin Abu Muayt came up, seized the shoulder of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, twisted his garment around his neck, and choked him violently with it. Then Abu Bakr came forward, took hold of Uqba's shoulder, pushed him away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and said, 'Would you kill a man merely for saying, My Lord is Allah, when he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord?' [Ghafir 40:28]"

عن عروة بن الزبير قال

قلت لعبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص: أخبرني بأشد ما صنع المشركون برسول الله ﷺ، قال: بينا رسول الله ﷺ يصلي بفناء الكعبة، إذ أقبل عقبة بن أبي معيط، فأخذ بمنكب رسول الله ﷺ مولوي ثوبه في عنقه، فخنقه به خنقا شديدا، فأقبل أبو بكر، فأخذ بمنكبه ودفع عن رسول الله ﷺ، وقال: {أتقتلون رجلا أن يقول ربي الله وقد جاءكم بالبينات من ربكم}

His saying, "And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, 'Do you kill a man because he says my Lord is Allah, and he has come to you with clear proofs from your Lord? If he is a liar, then upon him is his lie; but if he is truthful, some of what he promises you will strike you. Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.'"
