Ayesha reported,

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, Abu Bakr was at Sunh. Ismail said, meaning at al-Aliyah. Umar stood up saying, "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not died."She said that Umar also said, "By Allah, nothing else came to my mind. Allah will surely send him back, and he will cut off the hands and feet of some men."Then Abu Bakr came, uncovered the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and kissed him. He said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you. You were good in life and good in death. By the One in whose hand my soul rests, Allah will never let you taste death twice."Then he went out and said, "You who are swearing, take it easy."When Abu Bakr spoke, Umar sat down. Abu Bakr praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "Whoever used to worship Muhammad ﷺ, Muhammad has died. And whoever used to worship Allah, Allah is Living and does not die." He then recited, "Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die" [Zumar 39:30], and "Muhammad is no more than a messenger. Messengers have passed on before him. So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? And whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah at all, and Allah will reward the grateful" [Aal Imran 3:144].The people then broke down weeping… and the rest of the hadith.
