Aisha said, "I used to feel jealous of those women who offered themselves to the Messenger of Allah, and I would say, 'Does a woman really offer herself?' Then when Allah revealed, 'You may defer any of them you wish, and take to yourself any you wish, and any you desire of those you had set aside' [Ahzab 33:51], I said, 'By Allah, I see that your Lord hastens to satisfy your desire.'"
كنت أغار على اللاتي وهبن أنفسهن لرسول وأقول: تهب المرأة نفسها؟ فلما نزل قوله تعالى: {ترجي من تشاء منهن وتوى إليك من تشاء ومن ابتغيت ممن عزلت} قالت: قلت: والله ما أرى ربك إلا يسارع لك في هواك.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Tafsir (4788), and Muslim related it in the Book of Suckling (1463), both from the hadith of Abu Usama, from Hisham, from his father, from Ayesha, and I have already mentioned it.Regarding the words "You may defer whom you will of them" [Ahzab 33:51], this means you may postpone whichever of your wives you wish, not bringing her close to you and not spending the night with her.And the words "and take to yourself whom you will" [Ahzab 33:51] mean you spend the night with her. Yet despite this, the Prophet ﷺ used to allot nights fairly among them. From this we learn that dividing nights among wives was not obligatory upon him.And the words "and if you seek one you had set aside, there is no blame upon you" [Ahzab 33:51] mean that the choice in this matter rests in your hands.
