The Quraysh said to the Prophet ﷺ, "Pray to your Lord to turn Safa into gold for us, and we will believe in you."He asked, "Will you really do so?"They replied, "Yes."So he prayed, and Jibreel came to him and said, "Your Lord sends you peace and says to you, 'If you wish, I will turn Safa into gold for them, but whoever disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment such as I have inflicted on no one in all the worlds. Or if you wish, I will open for them the door of Tawba and mercy.'"He said, "Rather, the door of Tawba and mercy."
It was narrated by Ahmad (21663223... actually let me note the number as given), Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2224), Tabarani in al-Kabir (12736), and Hakim (1/53), all of them through the route of Sufyan Thawri, from Salama bin Kuhayl, from Imran bin Hakam, from Ibn Abbas, who mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. As for His saying, "And We do not send the signs except as a warning" [Isra 17:59], it means that Allah sends His signs so that people may fear, take heed, and return to Allah , and among these signs are the eclipses of the sun and the moon, as has come in the sahih.
