Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

The people of Mecca asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to turn Mount Safa into gold for them and to remove the surrounding mountains so they could cultivate the land. Allah عز وجل said, "If you wish, I will grant them what they ask, but if they then disbelieve, they will be destroyed just as those before them were destroyed. And if you wish, I will give them more time, perhaps some of their offspring may believe."He said, "No, give them more time."So Allah revealed this verse, "And nothing prevented Us from sending the signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign" [Isra 17:59].
