Ubayy bin Kaab reported,

On the day of Uhud, sixty-four men of the Ansar were killed, and six of the Emigrants, among them Hamza, and their dead were mutilated. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If we ever have a day like this against the idolaters, we will outdo them in mutilation."Then, on the day of the conquest, an unidentified man said, "There will be no Quraysh after today."So the crier of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, "Safety is granted to black and white alike, except for so-and-so and so-and-so," naming certain people. Then Allah تبارك وتعالى revealed, "And if you punish, then punish with the like of what you were afflicted with. But if you are patient, it is certainly better for those who are patient" [Nahl 16:126].So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We will be patient and will not punish."
