On the day of Uhud, sixty-four men of the Ansar were killed, and six of the Emigrants, among them Hamza, and their dead were mutilated. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If we ever have a day like this against the idolaters, we will outdo them in mutilation."Then, on the day of the conquest, an unidentified man said, "There will be no Quraysh after today."So the crier of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, "Safety is granted to black and white alike, except for so-and-so and so-and-so," naming certain people. Then Allah revealed, "And if you punish, then punish with the like of what you were afflicted with. But if you are patient, it is certainly better for those who are patient" [Nahl 16:126].So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We will be patient and will not punish."
Tirmidhi (3129) and Abdullah bin Ahmad in Zawaid al-Musnad (21229/2123), the wording being his, narrated it. Ibn Hibban (487) and Hakim (2/358–359) graded it sahih. All of them narrated it through various chains from Fadl bin Musa, who said, Isa bin Ubayd narrated to us, from Rabi bin Anas, from Abu Aliyah, from Ubayy bin Kaab, and he mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, "It is hasan gharib as a hadith of Ubayy bin Kaab." Hakim said, "Its chain is sahih."Its chain is hasan because of Isa bin Ubayd, who is al-Kindi Abu al-Munib, for his hadith is hasan. It also contains Rabi bin Anas, concerning whom there is disagreement, though his hadith is hasan.
