The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Lut. He truly took refuge in a mighty support."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: يرحم الله لوطا لقد كان يأوي إلى ركن شديد.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Prophets (3372), and Muslim in the Book of Faith (151), both from the hadith of Ibn Wahb, who said, Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman and Saeed bin Musayab, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it.His saying, "or could take refuge in a strong support" [Hud 11:80], refers to returning to Allah the Exalted. This is because Lut had left Iraq with his uncle Ibrahim, and Allah made him a prophet for the people of Sodom in Sham. He first said, "He said, 'If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support'" [Hud 11:80], meaning by this his clan and his people. With this he first excused himself to his guests, then he turned to Allah the Exalted, for He is the strongest of supports, the most powerful, and the most impregnable. So his saying, "or could take refuge in a strong support," is a description of the state he was in, meant to comfort his guests, not that he had forgotten reliance upon Allah the Exalted.
