We were sitting at the door of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ discussing matters of religion, with one citing a verse and another citing another verse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us with a face so flushed it looked as though pomegranate seeds had been burst upon it.He said, "People, is this what you were sent for? Is this what you were commanded to do? Do not turn back into disbelievers after me, striking one another's necks."
كنا جلوسا على باب رسول الله ﷺ نتذاكر، ينزع هذا بآية، وينزع هذا بآية، فخرج علينا رسول الله ﷺ كأنما تفقأ في وجهه حب الرمان، فقال: يا هؤلاء، أبهذا بعثتم؟ أم بهذا أمرتم؟ لا ترجعوا بعدي كفارا يضرب بعضكم رقاب بعض.
Bazzar narrated it (Kashf Astar - 179), and Tabarani (45/6), both through the route of Abdul-Rahman bin Mubarak Ayshi, who said, Suwayd Abu Hatim told us, from Qatada, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Saeed, and he related the hadith. Its chain is hasan. Abdul-Rahman bin Mubarak and his teacher Suwayd, who is Ibn Ibrahim Abu Hatim, are both truthful narrators.His saying, "he draws out a meaning from this verse," means he extracts a meaning from it. His saying, "it was as if pomegranate seeds burst open in his face," means they split open, and this is a figurative expression for the change in his facial features ﷺ and the intensity of his reaction from anger.
