When we and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims met in battle, they could not hold their ground against us for as long as it takes to milk a sheep. We came rushing forward, brandishing our swords toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when we were almost upon him, suddenly there appeared between us and him Some men with handsome faces who said, "May the faces be disfigured. Go back!" So we were routed by those very words.
عبد الرحمن مولى أم برثن شهد حنينا كافرا.
لما التقينا نحن ورسول الله ﷺ والمسلمون لم يقوموا لنا حلب شاة، فجئنا نهش سيوفنا بين يدي رسول الله ﷺ، حتى إذا غشيناه، فإذا بيننا وبينه رجال حسان الوجوه، فقالوا: شاهت الوجوه، فارجعوا، فهزمنا من ذلك الكلام.

Musaddad narrated it in his Musnad, as Bayhaqi mentioned in Dalail (5/143). He said, Jafar bin Sulayman told us, he said, Awf told us, that is Ibn Abu Jameela Arabi, he said, Abdul-Rahman, the freedman of Umm Burthun, told us, then he related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Jafar bin Sulayman and Abdul-Rahman the freedman of Umm Burthun, for both of them are hasan in transmitting hadith.Tabari also narrated it in his tafsir (11/393) through the route of Husayn, who said, Jafar bin Sulayman told me the same. Husayn here is Sunayd, the author of the tafsir. There is some discussion about him, but he poses no problem when corroborated by other transmissions.A misprint occurred in the published edition of Ibn Jareer's tafsir in the name of Husayn and in the name of Jafar bin Sulayman.
