Abbas reported, "I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn. Abu Sufyan bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib and I stayed close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and did not leave him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was riding his white mule that Farwa bin Nufatha al-Judhami had given him as a gift. When the Muslims and the disbelievers met in battle, the Muslims turned and fled. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began urging his mule forward toward the disbelievers, while I was holding the bridle of his mule, restraining her so she would not go too fast, and Abu Sufyan was holding his stirrup. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Abbas, call out to the Companions of the Samura tree.'"Abbas, who had a powerful voice, said, "I called out at the top of my voice, 'Where are the Companions of the Samura tree?' By Allah, the moment they heard my voice they turned back toward us like a cow turning back to her calves. They cried out, 'At your service. At your service.'They engaged the disbelievers in battle, and the call went out to the Ansar, 'People of the Ansar. People of the Ansar.' Then the call was narrowed to the Banu Harith bin Khazraj, 'Sons of Harith bin Khazraj. Sons of Harith bin Khazraj.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, on his mule, stretched himself up like one looking out from above to watch their fighting, then he said, 'This is when the furnace has grown hot.'Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took some pebbles and threw them in the faces of the disbelievers, saying, 'They are defeated, by the Lord of Muhammad.'I went to look, and the fighting appeared to me to be just as it had been. By Allah, no sooner had he thrown those pebbles at them than I continued to see their force weakening and their cause turning to retreat."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (1755), from Abu Tahir Ahmad bin Amr bin Sarh, who said, Ibn Wahb told us, Yunus told me, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Kathir bin Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib told me, who said, Abbas said, and then he related it.As for His saying, "and sent down forces you could not see" [Tawbah 9:26], these are the angels. Saeed bin Jubayr said, Allah reinforced His Prophet with five thousand angels bearing distinguishing marks.
