When the Prophet ﷺ returned from the Umrah of al-Jiranah, he sent Abu Bakr to lead the Hajj, and we set out with him. When we reached al-Arj, the call to the dawn prayer was made, and he stood ready to begin with the takbir. Just then he heard the grunting of a camel behind him, so he paused before pronouncing the takbir and said, "This is the grunting of al-Jadaa, the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ must have decided to perform Hajj himself. Perhaps it is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so we will pray with him."But it turned out to be Ali riding her.Abu Bakr asked him, "Have you come as a commander or as a messenger?"Ali replied, "No, only as a messenger. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me with Surah Baraah to recite to the people at the stations of the Hajj."We arrived at Makkah, and on the day before the Day of Tarwiyah, Abu Bakr stood and addressed the people, instructing them about their rites of Hajj. When he finished, Ali
stood and recited Surah Baraah to the people from beginning to end. Then we went out with him, and when the Day of Arafah came, Abu Bakr stood and addressed the people, instructing them about their rites. When he finished, Ali stood and recited Surah Baraah to the people from beginning to end. Then came the Day of Sacrifice, and we performed the ifadah. When Abu Bakr returned, he addressed the people and instructed them about their ifadah, their sacrifices, and their rites. When he finished, Ali stood and recited Surah Baraah to the people from beginning to end. When the first day of departure came, Abu Bakr stood and addressed the people, instructing them how to depart and how to throw the pebbles, teaching them their rites. When he finished, Ali stood and recited Surah Baraah to the people from beginning to end.
Nasai (2993), Ibn Khuzayma (2974), and Ibn Hibban (6645) all narrated it through the route of Abu Qurra Musa bin Tariq, from Ibn Jurayj, who said, "Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym told us, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir," and he related it. Ibn Khuzayma's wording is abridged. Then Nasai said, "Ibn Khuthaym is not strong in hadith, and I have only included this so that it would not be mistaken for a report of Ibn Jurayj from Abu Zubayr directly, and we have written it only from Ishaq bin Ibrahim. Yahya bin Saeed Qattan did not abandon the hadith of Ibn Khuthaym, nor did Abdul-Rahman, except that Ali bin Madini said, 'Ibn Khuthaym's hadith is rejected,' and it is as though Ali bin Madini was created for hadith."I say, Ibn Khuthaym is disputed, but the majority lean toward strengthening his standing. Ibn Main, Ibn Saad, and Ajli deemed him trustworthy. Abu Hatim said, "There is nothing wrong with him, his hadith is acceptable." And Nasai, in another report, said, "Trustworthy."As for his statement, "When he returned from the umrah of Jirana, he sent Abu Bakr," he meant the following year, because the Prophet's ﷺ umrah from Jirana took place in the year eight, in the month of Dhul-Qaidah, after which he returned to Madinah. It would not have been possible for him to send Abu Bakr as commander of the hajj in the month of Dhul-Hijjah of that same year. Rather, that happened in the following year, the ninth. So the purpose of mentioning Jirana in this hadith is to establish the chronological order of events, not to indicate that the two events followed directly one after the other.Along similar lines is what was reported from Ibn Abbas, who said, "The Prophet ﷺ sent Abu Bakr and commanded him to proclaim these words, then sent Ali after him. While Abu Bakr was somewhere along the road, he heard the braying of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Qaswa. Abu Bakr came out startled, thinking it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but it turned out to be Ali. Ali handed him the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Prophet had ordered Ali to proclaim these words. So the two of them set out and performed the hajj. Ali stood during the days of Tashriq and proclaimed, 'The protection of Allah and His Messenger is free of every polytheist. So travel freely in the land for four months. No polytheist shall perform hajj after this year, no one shall circle the House naked, and no one shall enter Paradise except a believer.' Ali kept proclaiming, and whenever he grew tired, Abu Bakr would stand and proclaim it."Tirmidhi (3090) and Hakim (3/51) both narrated it through the route of Abbad bin Awwam, who said, "Sufyan bin Husayn told us, from Hakam bin Utayba, from Miqsam, from Abdullah bin Abbas," and he related it. Hakam bin Utayba only heard five hadiths from Miqsam, and this is not one of them.
