We were with Hudhayfah when he said, "None remain of those mentioned in this verse except three, and none of the hypocrites remain except four."An Arabi said, "You, the companions of Muhammad ﷺ, tell us these things, but we do not understand. What about these people who break into our houses and steal our valuables?"Hudhayfah replied, "Those are the wicked sinners. Yes, only four of the hypocrites remain, one of whom is a very old man who, if he drank cold water, would not feel its coldness."
كنا عند حذيفة، فقال: ما بقي من أصحاب هذه الآية إلا ثلاثة ولا من المنافقين إلا أربعة، فقال أعرابي: إنكم- أصحاب محمد ﷺ- تخبروننا، فلا ندري فما بال هؤلاء الذين يبقرون بيوتنا ويسرقون أعلاقنا؟ قال: أولئك الفساق، أجل، لم يبق منهم إلا أربعة أحدهم شيخ كبير لو شرب الماء البارد لما وجد برده.
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4658) from Yahya bin Muthanna, who said, Yahya narrated to us, who said, Ismail narrated to us, who said, Zayd bin Wahb narrated to us, who said, and he mentioned it.
