Drowsiness overcame us while we were in our ranks on the day of Badr.Abu Talha said, "I was among those who were overcome by drowsiness that day. My sword kept falling from my hand and I would pick it up, then it would fall again and I would pick it up."
غشينا النعاس ونحن في مصافنا يوم بدر. قال أبو طلحة: وكنت فيمن غشيه النعاس يومئذ، فجعل سيفي يسقط من يدي وآخذه، ويسقط وآخذه.
Ahmad narrated it (16357) from Yunus, who said, "Shayban narrated to us, from Qatada and Husayn (who is Ibn Muhammad), according to Shayban's version, from Qatada, who said, 'Anas bin Malik narrated to us that Abu Talha said,'" then he mentioned it. Ibn Hibban (7180) also narrated it through this same route. Shayban is Ibn Abdul-Rahman Nahwi, trustworthy, and the author of a book. However, Bukhari narrated it in the Tafsir (4562) from Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman Abu Yaqub, who said, "Husayn bin Muhammad narrated to us," with his chain of transmission, and in it he said, "the day of Uhud." He likewise narrated it in the Maghazi (4068), saying, "Khalifa said to me, 'Yazid bin Zuray narrated to us, Saeed narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas, from Abu Talha,'" mentioning something similar with the wording "the day of Uhud."Scholars held that the drowsiness occurred at Badr, as in His saying, exalted is He, in Surah Anfal, "[Remember] when He covered you with drowsiness as a security from Him, and sent down upon you water from the sky to purify you thereby, and to remove from you the pollution of Satan, and to strengthen your hearts and make your feet firm thereby" [Anfal 8:11], just as it also occurred at Uhud, according to His saying, exalted is He, in Surah Al Imran [Al Imran 3:154], "Then He sent down upon you, after the distress, a security, a drowsiness overcoming a party of you" [Al Imran 3:154].The wisdom in casting drowsiness upon the believers was to make their hearts secure and unafraid, for the fearful person is not overcome by drowsiness. As for His saying, "and sent down upon you water from the sky to purify you thereby" [Anfal 8:11], this means purifying them from ritual impurity, both minor and major, since it was possible that some of them were in a state of minor impurity and others in a state of major impurity. So Allah intended to purify them outwardly, and to purify them inwardly from the promptings and pollution of Satan.
