Abu Musa Ashari reported,

We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and whenever we came upon a valley, we would proclaim "La ilaha illa Allah" and "Allahu Akbar," raising our voices.The Prophet ﷺ said, "People, go easy on yourselves. You are not calling upon someone deaf or absent. He is with you. He is All-Hearing, Near. Blessed is His name and exalted is His majesty."

كنا مع رسول الله ﷺ، فكنا إذا أشرفنا على واد هللنا، وكبرنا ارتفعت أصواتنا، فقال النبي ﷺ: يا أيها الناس، اربعوا على أنفسكم، فإنكم لا تدعون أصم ولا غائبا، إنه معكم، إنه سميع قريب، تبارك اسمه وتعالى جده.

Commentary

Zia-ur-Rahman Azami

Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jihad (2992), and Muslim in the Book of Remembrance (2704), both from the hadith of Asim, from Abu Uthman, from Abu Musa, as mentioned. The wording is Bukhari's.His saying, "Be gentle with yourselves," means be kind and easy with yourselves. It may also be intended as in the saying of Allah Most High, "Say, 'Call upon Allah or call upon the Rahman, whichever you call, to Him belong the most beautiful names. Do not be loud in your prayer, nor be silent in it, but seek a way between that.'" [Isra 17:110], because when the polytheists heard the Quran, they would curse Allah عز وجل , and curse the one to whom it was revealed, namely the Prophet ﷺ. So Allah Most High commanded that they not be so loud in prayer that the polytheists could hear and curse Allah , nor so silent, that is, toward your companions, that they cannot hear it at all. Rather, choose a way between the two matters, which is the middle course.
