Anas bin Malik reported,

Anas said, "I was passing the cup around to Abu Talha, Abu Ubayda bin Jarra, Muaz, Suhayl bin Bayda, and Abu Dujana, until their heads began to sway. Then we heard a caller announcing, 'Wine has been forbidden!' No one came in to us and no one of us went out. We poured the drink away, smashed the jars, and some of us performed wudu while others bathed. We put on some of Umm Sulaym's perfume, then we went out to the masjid, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reciting,"You who believe, wine, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are filth from the work of Satan" until he reached "So will you not desist?" [Maidah 5:91].A man asked, "Messenger of Allah, what of the standing of someone who died while still drinking it?"So Allah تبارك وتعالى revealed, "There is no blame on those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have consumed" [Maidah 5:93], to the end of the verse.A man asked Qatada, "Did you hear this yourself from Anas?"Qatada replied, "Yes."And a man asked Anas, "Did you hear it yourself from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"Anas replied, "Yes," or he said, "It was related to me by someone who would not lie to me. By Allah, we did not lie in those days, nor did we even know what lying was."
